A meeting of Mizoram Employees’ State Insurance Society was held today at the Chief Secretary Conference Hall at 10:00 AM under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, Dr. Renu Sharma IAS. Secretary, LESDE Department, Director, LESDE Department, Chief Executive Officer, MSHCS, Officials from the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Headquarters – Finance Commissioner, Medical Commissioners, Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Director, IMO, ESI Dispensary, and other officials from LESDE Department also attended this meeting.

Mr. Lalramsanga Sailo IRS, Secretary, LESDE Department greeted the members present and discussion regarding the initiative and plans taken by MESIS took place. Ms. T.L Yaden, Finance Commissioner, ESIC Headquaters described the structure, benefits, steps taken by under ESI Scheme in Mizoram and the plans to implement ESI Scheme in the whole districts of Mizoram using powerpoint presentation. According to the ESIC Act, 1948, registration under the ESI Scheme is mandatory for private establishments employing more than 10 persons. In this regard, process to undertake initiatives was discussed. Mr. Lalramsanga Sailo requested the ESIC officials to visit Mizoram in the near future and organized more awareness campaigns and workshops throughout the state involving the line departments viz. Health & Family Welfare Department, School Education Department, Higher & Technical Education Department, Commerce & Industries Department. 

The ESI Scheme is financed by contributions from employers and employees. The rate of contribution by employer is 3.25% of the wages payable to employees. The employees’ contribution is at the rate of 0.75% of the wages payable to an employee. Employees earning less than ₹137/- a day as daily wages are exempted from payment of their share of contribution.

Section 46 of the Act envisages the following social security benefits:

  1. Medical Benefits
  2. Sickness Benefits
  3. Maternity Benefits
  4. Disablement Benefits
  5. Dependent Benefits
  6. Funeral Expenses
  7. Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yajona
  8. Medical Care to retired Insured Person

At present, 4006 Insured Persons and 324 units/establishments are registered under the ESI Scheme in Mizoram.
